The UK government announced on January 18 that the government would not interfere with prices under the influence of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), the carbon emission trading scheme of the UK. The decision meant that the market will operate without intervention in January, although future official options remain open if prices would be shown an excessive rise.

UK ETS offers an option to supply quotas from future auctions if prices are above the long-term average for three consecutive months but did not mandate such intervention.

After triggering the UK ETS' cost containment mechanism (CCM) in January, the UK ETS authority has decided not to reallocate or release additional supply to the market at this time.
