According to reports, UK Steel, a trade
association for the UK steel industry, urged that government would extend the
validity period of steel safeguard measures from the expiry of June 2021.
The UK, as part of the European Union (EU), had implemented safeguard measures
since 2018. The British government has transferred to use its own laws this
January in order to prevent trade diversions due to the US' tariffs.
The British International Steel Trade Association (ISTA) objected the
government to continue to implement steel safeguard measures, saying that some
domestic manufacturers were unable to produce enough steel products for
distributors and some processing mills. Some processing mills must rely on
imported materials from others countries except for the EU.
The British government must decide whether to maintain this safeguard before
June, and the EU steel safeguard measures were expected to be finalized in July.
