In the first half of 2025, Austrian steel production reached 3.66 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 4.9%. In June, Austrian steel production reached 591,000 tons, a 14.3% decrease from the previous month and a 6.6% decrease from the previous year.
The EU as a whole produced 65.4 million tons of steel in the first half of the year, a 3.3% decrease from the previous year. In June, steel production reached 10.4 million tons, an 8.2% decrease from the previous year.
voestalpine AG, a major Austrian steel producer, said high electricity costs were forcing them to reduce their competitiveness, forcing European customers to seek cheaper suppliers. They also called on authorities to update the electricity cost compensation mechanism for energy-intensive companies.
