Australia planned to use domestic and international carbon offsets to reduce emissions by 10-20% in order to achieve its 2050 net-zero emissions target, and further reduce 15% through new technologies in the future.

Australia is the world's largest exporter of LNG and the second-largest exporter of thermal coal. It is also the world’s largest exporter of iron ore and metallurgical coal, two key materials in steel production.

Australia is one of the countries with the highest emitters on a per capita basis among developed countries. The country was previously unwilling to support any policy to reduce the use of fossil fuels, but now conditional support is given to the net-zero emission target.

On October 26, Australia's Long Term Emissions Reduction Plan was released. Australia has set a goal of reducing emissions by up to 35% below 2005 levels by 2030, beyond the 26-28% initially set.

At least four state governments in Australia have pledged to reduce emissions more significantly than the federal government, which is equivalent to a national reduction of about 34% by 2030.
