Rio Tinto stated an anticipated landslip at
part of the US Bingham Canyon copper mine. There were no injuries to personnel,
but it created some disrupting operations.
Rio Tinto Kennecott produced 140,000 tons of copper in 2020, and the disruption
occurred due to the short supply of copper concentrate globally and logistics
challenges caused by the COVID-19 epidemic shutdowns.
All personnel had been removed from the area in advance for safety. Other parts
of the mine and the Rio Tinto Kennecott operation stay normal operations.
In 2013, the same mine experienced a significant landslide which caused damages
to equipment, a building structure, and its concentrate production.
