According to the latest report issued by the International Energy Agency (IEA), as the global economy recovers from the COVID-19 epidemic and promotes the increase in demand for fossil energy, it is expected that this year's global coal power generation will increase by 9% year on year. The growth rate of global coal demand will slow down, but the demand will reach a peak in 2024.
Without policy intervention, the global demand for coal is likely to reach a new historical high in 2022.
The IEA’s Executive Director Fatih Birol stated that coal is the world's largest single source of carbon emissions. This year, the global coal power generation has hit a record high, which is a worrying sign.
If the governments do not take immediate and effective actions to solve the carbon emissions problem, people will lose the opportunity to control the global average temperature rise not exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius.
